Expert reveiw by a family doctor in Beijing
Dr. Richard Saint Cyr gave Totobobo mask a trial and he is impressed with the performance and happy with the comfort.
In his own words:
"Totobobo didn’t pay me anything, and I get no income from them for this mention. I’m simply trying to find well-researched options to protect myself and anyone else from Beijing’s air pollution, and I’d be more than happy to review other masks as well and to publish the results. Last year I tried to find good studies on other brands, including Respro, but I found no well-designed studies on other masks. Does anyone have such information?
I think Totobobo is a good and affordable option for people. And a 135-fold drop in pollution is very impressive; even on an emergency day with the AQI over 500, the mask would bring your air to WHO-safe levels."

TotoBobo Introduces New Reusable Mask – Protects Children from Cancer Causing Incense Smoke
NewswireToday - /newswire/ - Singapore, Singapore, 08/28/2008 - Dream Lab One Pte Ltd / TOTOBOBO, a transparent and reusable mask, may be the only practical solution for children who cannot avoid exposed to the harmful incense smoke in Asian cities. | |||
Smoke particles from burning incense were found to cause cancer of the upper respiratory track. A 12 years long "Singapore Chinese Health Study" of more than 61,000 ethnic Chinese adults living in Singapore discovered 'Among non-smokers who used incense during the day or at all times, the increased cancer risk was three times that of smokers.' said Prof Koh of National University of Singapore. |
Pollution can be notoriously bad in some Asian countries, and one urban cyclist from Singapore has begun marketing a cycling specific mask for commuters in particulate-heavy places. The nose-less design prevents glasses from fogging as easily and helps keep the whole mask cooler, but does force one to mouth-breath in order to make any use of the filtering mechanism. The filter is easily cleanable and replaceable, with the mask available for $25 straight from totobobo.com. For other uses like dusty indoor work check out the models that completely cover the nose and mouth.
I use one for my daily commute here in LA. It’s super simple to use–and the filters are actually pretty dirty after my scheduled 30-day change out. At least some of the crap in the air is not making into my lungs…
how does this work? it doesn’t even cover the nose?
Funny, in Japanese martial arts they tell you to breathe the other way.
It’s pretty crazy that because of our environment, this was invented. Or that it is advisable for cyclist to wear some sort of respirator at all! We shouldn’t have to worry about our air..but we do :/ We’re the ones trying to pollute less…And now were the ones wearing these things?
